How to password-protect a PDF and unlock it later

Add AES-256 password encryption, understand opening and owner passwords, and remove encryption using a known password.

Steps at a glance

  1. Choose the PDF and set an opening password.
  2. Download and test the protected copy in a PDF reader.
  3. Use Unlock PDF with the known password when you need to edit an unencrypted copy.

Decide whether encryption fits the task

An opening password requires a compatible PDF reader to obtain the password before showing the document. That is different from drawing a “Confidential” watermark onto a page. A watermark is visible labeling; it does not prevent someone from opening or copying the document.

Create the protected copy

Open Protect PDF, select the document, and enter an opening password. DocVelto uses AES-256 encryption and also accepts an optional owner password. The tool uses the server only after upload consent. Current extended-tool limits are 10 MB per file and up to 200 PDF pages.

Verify before sharing

Download the protected copy and open it in a separate PDF reader to check that the password is required and that the pages are intact. Keep the unencrypted original in a place appropriate for the document. Passwords and document contents are not logged by the processing service, and DocVelto cannot recover a forgotten password.

Remove encryption with the known password

Use Unlock PDF when you need an unencrypted working copy. Enter the password that opens the file. The tool does not guess an unknown password. If password protection is one step in a PDF workflow, put it last so the preceding steps can still read the document.
